Message from head of Hawza Ilmiyya

In the Name of God the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful
My dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Salamun Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh,

It is narrated that Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a) quoted Prophet Muhammad (s) as saying: "Allah (swt) makes the one who proceeds on a path in the pursuit of knowledge, proceed therewith on a path to Paradise. And, verily, the angels spread their wings for the seekers of knowledge out of delight. Verily, every creature in the heavens and on the earth asks forgiveness for the seeker of knowledge, even the fish in the sea. The merit of the learned ('ālim) over the the worshipper ('ābid) is like the merit of the moon over the stars on the night of a full moon. The learned are the heirs of the prophets for the prophets did not leave behind a legacy of wealth but rather that of knowledge. So whoever partakes of it derives a plenteous benefit." (Al-Kulayni, Usūl al-Kāfi, the Book on Merits of Knowledge, the Chapter on the Reward of the Learned and Learners)

Trusting Allah (swt) and seeking His guidance, we are entering a new stage in the development of Hawza studies in the UK. Some of the characteristics of this stage include benefiting from previous experiences of running the Hawza of London and the infrastructure built up over years in ICAS combined with enjoying the recognition of the principal Hawzas and marja'iyyah.
The Hawza 'Ilmiyya of England is now very pleased to welcome all seekers of knowledge who aim to gain a deep and scholarly understanding of Islam in a way that meets the standards of the main long established Hawzas with their rich tradition of training scholars and developing Islamic sciences whilst at the same time taking into account contemporary issues and the challenges faced by the Muslim community in the west. We hope that our graduates would become instrumental in delivering the universal message of peace, justice and mercy throughout the world.

Mohammed Ali Shomali
Head of the Hawza Ilmiyya of England
